Falcons fly past Bears

The Hershey Bears battled to get a standings point Saturday night, but fell to the Springfield Falcons 5-4 in a shootout at Mass Mutual Center.

After Hershey's Alexandre Giroux scored his 36th goal of the season just 2:12 into the game, Springfield responded with three unanswered goals in the first period. The Falcons peppered Hershey goaltender Braden Holtby with 16 shots in the first period, while the Bears could only manage two against Springfield netminder J.P. Levasseur.

The Bears' Andrew Gordon scored early in the second period, but Springfield's Chad Wiseman put the Falcons back up by two late in the first period before Hershey's Keith Aucoin scored a goal to cut the lead to one with just 2:17 left in the period.

Hershey's Steve Pinizzotto scored a short-handed goal to tie the game at four before the Falcons won in the sixth round of the shootout.

The Bears resume play at Worcester today at 4:05 p.m. the Bears return home Friday to face Albany,.
