Notes, quotes and why did Angela Funk go on national TV to tell her story when she wouldn't speak to local reporters?

Funk — the lover of Denver funeral home operator Michael Roseboro, who was convicted of killing his wife, Jan — was the "star" of the "48 Hours Mystery" program on CBS a week ago. Funk, who also gave birth to Roseboro's son, hung up when a reporter from the Sunday News called Saturday to seek her opinion on the TV program.

Maybe Funk, who apparently wasn't paid for her appearance, thinks most people here don't stay up that late on Saturday night to watch TV.

Then again, I'm always amazed by local people who will talk openly to national or regional media, but not the local media. You don't think it's going to get back home? Or you expect gentler treatment?

• Speaking of TV, the Lifetime Movie Network is presenting a movie on the Nickel Mines school tragedy. "Amish Grace" will be broadcast at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 28. It's getting terrible reviews for its obvious mistakes from those who know Amish life.

Can't producers spend some money and at least buy a book about the Amish before they make a movie?

Does anyone remember Ernest Borgnine playing an Amish father who wields a wicked pitchfork in the movie "Violent Saturday"?

• You might say that state Rep. Scott Boyd is not a big fan of Gov. Ed. Rendell. Boyd, a Republican from Lampeter, has a countdown on his Web site — repboyd.com — of the days, hours, minutes and seconds left in the Democratic governor's second term.

• During the February snowstorms I got to wondering why some drivers of pickup trucks ride around with their cargo beds loaded with snow.

In the city, I noticed that "street furniture" used to hold parking spaces got sophisticated. I saw some spaces that were reserved by small orange cones.

And how can so many people need snow shovels every time it snows? What happens to the old ones?

Were you as amused as I was when WGAL-TV sent reporters out to Columbia Avenue to do "live" reports during the storms? The station sits off Columbia Avenue.

But give the station its due; their weather forecasters did the best job.

• Why do we use the phrase "skilled craftsmen." Are there "unskilled" craftsmen?

And what do we mean by "professionally trained." Isn't it enough to say "trained"?

What is a "corporate" office building? Is it different from an office building?

• I had to smile when a pothole opened up on the track during the running of the Daytona 500. It gave the race some everyday reality. Now all the drivers need are children in the back seat demanding, "Are we there yet?"

• We bought a dehumidifier for use in the basement. On the instructions, it states in large letters:

"Do not use outside."

(You can't make up stuff like that.)

• Shopping at a sporting goods store, I went down the rack of Phillies team jerseys: $100 (Utley); $100 (Rollins); $100 (Howard); and then $19. I flipped it over and the name on the back was "Lee," as in Cliff Lee, the pitcher traded this off-season. Talk about depreciation.

• James Garner's classic TV series "The Rockford Files" is being remade with a new star, Dermot Mulroney. There oughta be a law against remaking great shows.

Outer limits

Daughter Abigail, 14, has unlimited text messaging on her cell phone. In February, I swear she crossed into super-unlimited.
