A two-alarm fire started by a wood stove destroyed a Ronks cabinet shop Monday night.

Mascot Cabinets at 259 Mascot Road was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived after the 10:40 p.m. fire call, Bird-in-Hand Fire Company Fire Chief Lonnie Kauffman said.

About 75 firefighters from area departments kept the fire from spreading to a nearby house, he said. The fire was brought under control in about an hour.

The only injury — a minor one — happened when a firefighter strained his back lifting hose, Kauffman said.

Neighbors reported the fire, he said. No one was inside the cabinet shop as it had closed.

The structure was destroyed, Kauffman said. Damage was $70,000 to the building and $65,000 to contents.

The state police fire marshal unit ruled the fire was accidental, police said. It originated with a wood stove in the basement which was used for heating.

Christ B. Riehl Sr. and Christ B. Riehl Jr. own the property, Kauffman said.

Newspaper records show a fire in 1992 did $70,000 damage to the elder Riehl's farmhouse at the 259 Mascot Road property. That fire also started in a wood stove, investigators said at the time.
