Musicals and more springing up at area schools

There's plenty to do in Lancaster County for the next few months when young thespians from across the county take to the stage. Here's a guide to some of the productions under way:

FEBRUARY

Central Lancaster County Homeschool Music is kicking off the spring musical season with a production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance," a famous comedic opera, tonight through Sunday. The show, which tells the saga of a young man caught between love, duty and piracy, will be performed at Leola Elementary School at 7 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. Tickets cost $8. Lancaster Country Day School's "Antigone" will be held through Saturday at the school's Steinman Theatre. Show time is 7 p.m. for the ancient Greek drama that is based on faith, family and the law of the land. There is no cost for the show, but donations are welcomed. Call the school at 392-2916 for more information. The audience will be seated on the floor in order to create a more interactive venue, so you might want to bring your own pillow.

MARCH

Lampeter-Strasburg High School cast members will present "Once Upon A Mattress," which is based on the "Princess and the Pea" fairytale, Thursday-March 6 at the high school's Performing Arts Center. This is a story about a prince's mother who does everything she can to keep her son from marrying the woman he loves. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. for the March 4-6 shows. A 2 p.m. matinee is slated for March 6. Tickets cost $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens. They are available at the high school office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Pequea Valley High School performers will present the musical "Grease," a 1950s coming-of-age story that features catchy rock 'n roll tunes, Thursday through March 6. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door. To reserve seats, call 768-5500, ext. 5508 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tickets cost $9 for adults and $7 for students. The Music Boosters are sponsoring a hamburger dinner starting at 5 p.m. March 5 and 6.

Hempfield High School's Performing Arts Center will become a magical garden March 5-7 when the music department presents "The Secret Garden," a dramatic tale of family relationships, ghosts, love and the magical mystery of renewal. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. for the March 5 and 6 performances and 2:30 p.m. for the March 7 matinee. Reserved tickets cost $5 for students and senior citizens and $10 for adults. Tickets may be reserved ending today by calling 618-1016. During the week of the show, tickets will be available in the student commons during lunch hours and this Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the PAC lobby.

Penn Manor High School actors and actresses will entertain audiences March 11-13 with a production of John Kander and Fred Ebb's "Curtains." Penn Manor is the first in the county to perform the murder-mystery musical comedy that ended its Broadway run in 2008.

The show, which is set in 1959, is a "whodunit" tale of a group of producers and performers who are involved with a production of "Robin Hood of the Old West" at the Colonial Theatre in Boston. Everything goes awry when the leading lady, who is about as untalented as an actress could be, is murdered during the opening night's curtain call. While the cast and crew try to regroup, Lieutenant Frank Cioffi of the Boston Police Department works diligently to solve the murder.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. March 11-13 in the Penn Manor High School A.N. Ranck Auditorium. There is also a Saturday matinee scheduled for 2 p.m. on March 13. All seats are reserved on a first-come basis. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any student cast, crew or orchestra members, or by calling Melissa Mintzer at 872-9520, ext. 1515. Tickets are also available at the high school office or by emailing Melissa.mintzer@pennmanor.net.

If purchased by March 10, tickets for students cost $5 and adult tickets cost $7. All other available seats will be sold for $1 more at the door.

Columbia Borough High School cast members also will perform the musical "Grease," March 11-13 at the Columbia Junior/Senior High School Auditorium. Show time is 7:00 p.m. every evening and 2 p.m. on Sat., March 13. Tickets cost $6 for adults. Admission for anyone under 18 is $4. Senior citizens can attend for $3. J.P. McCaskey High School actors and actresses will present "Thoroughly Modern Millie," a high-spirited musical romp sent in New York City in 1922. It's a story of a young woman who moved to the Big Apple to find a new life for herself. The show will be presented March 18-20. Show time is 7:30 p.m. at the J.P. McCaskey Auditorium.

Manheim Central High School cast members will perform "Once Upon A Mattress," which is based on the "Princess and the Pea" fairytale, March 18-20.

Tickets are available on March 9, 11, 15, 16 and 17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the high school lobby.

Manheim Township High School actors and actresses will present Stephen Sondheim's "Into The Woods," which is a story about a baker and his wife who feel the need to break a curse so they can live happily ever after, March 18-20 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school's auditorium. All tickets are reserved seating. Tickets cost $8 for children, students and senior citizens and $10 for adults. Tickets can be purchased beginning Monday at the box office located in the high school auditorium lobby on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. or online at http://mtpa.mtwp.net.

Cocalico High School's talented cast will perform "The Wizard of Oz" in the high school auditorium March 19-21. Join them for a journey along the famous yellow brick road at 7:30 p.m. March 19 and 20 and at 2 p.m. March 21. Tickets cost $5 and are available at the door or by calling Joe Vulopas at 336-1423.

Donegal Performing Arts will present "No No Nanette" March 19-21 at Donegal High School Auditorium. The musical comedy from the book written by Otto Harbach and Frank Mandel takes place in the roaring 1920's when Bible salesman Jimmy Smith decides to give handouts to several young ladies. Who knows what will happen if Smith's wife finds out? Show times are 8 p.m. March 19 and 20. Matinees are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sat., March 20 and Sun., March 21. Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for seniors and students. A special performance for seniors will be held at 1:30 p.m. on March 18 and admission is by donation.

Warwick High School performers will present "Thoroughly Modern Millie," a high-spirited musical romp sent in New York City in 1922. Hempfield High School performers are also presenting "You Can't Take It With You" March 26-27 in the Hempfield High School Hackman Auditorium. Curtain time is 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for students and senior citizens and $10 for adults. The show is a tale of what can go wrong when a young man brings his girlfriend home to meet his parents.

APRIL

Solanco High School cast members will perform Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma," a well-known Broadway musical set in the Oklahoma Territory just prior to it becoming a state, in the high school auditorium April 9 and 10. The show is about the romance of a cowboy who falls for a farm girl. The friction that arises between the ranchers and the farmers is central to the plot. Show time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $7 for reserved seats. Order forms will be available from all cast members and at Solanco Video in Quarryville.

Conestoga Valley High School thespians will present Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," a story of a young girl's mission to rescue her father from the clutches of a beast with a secret, April 16-18 in the high school auditorium. Show times are 7 p.m. on April 16 and 17 and 2 p .m. on April 18. All tickets are priced at $5. Tickets are available at the door or in advance by calling Dan Jurman at 419-7875.

Ephrata High School actors and actresses will present "Pippin," a musical parable about a young man's search for life's meaning and truth, at 7:30 p.m. April 23 and 24 in the high school auditorium. A matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m. April 25. Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for students. Beginning April 1, reservations can be made by calling the ticket box office at 721-1592 or on the district's website at www.easd.k12.pa.us.

Lancaster Mennonite High School performers will present "High Button Shoes," a story about a con man who returns to his hometown of New Brunswick, New Jersey with the intent of swindling his old friends out of their money. The fun begins when he is pursed by the Keystone Cops to Atlantic City. Show dates are April 29-May 1. Show time is 7:30 p.m. for all evening performances and 2 p.m. for the Saturday matinee. The cost of evening show tickets is $8 for students and $10 for adults. The matinee tickets cost $1 less. Groups of 12 or more receive a $1 discount per ticket.
