Fire caused about $600,000 damage to a Columbia business Thursday, officials said.

The fire started a little after 4 a.m. in or around one of three machines that were running at Columbia Pattern and Machine, 4604 Klinesville Road, said Richard Haines, fire chief of West Hempfield Fire and Rescue.

No one was in the building at the time, and no one was injured while fighting the fire, he said.

A motorist on Old Chickies Hill Road reported the fire, Haines said. When firefighters arrived, smoke was pouring from the roof, and an orange glow could be seen.

"It had a good head start on us in the inside," Haines said.

About 50 firefighters brought the fire under control around 6 a.m.

Most of the damage was to computer-controlled machines and other equipment and to part of the roof of the 7,500-square-foot building, state police Fire Marshal Brian Herr said.

He estimated damage to the building at $100,000 and to contents at $500,000.

Klinesville Road was closed between Fairview and Chickies Hill roads for a time.
