Talk about turning up the heat.

Living Word Academy's girls' basketball players must have felt like they'd spent 32 minutes inside a sauna Wednesday in their District Three Class A opener.

Lancaster Country Day smothered the Lions, allowing only one field goal — outside of a two-minute third-quarter stretch — en route to a 28-12 win in Witmer.

"We rely on our defense," Country Day coach Hilary Waltman understated afterwards. "Defensive intensity was (the difference). We struggle to put the ball in the basket."

But the Cougars scored points — more than enough — when they needed them. That included an 11-2 run to open the game, and a 10-point burst to close it.

Junior tower Amanda Leslie fueled the latter run, scoring eight of her game-best 12 points in the second half. Senior teammate Sarah Long scored all seven of her points during the early rush.

It wasn't pretty on either side, but Leslie and Co. aren't worried about style points at this stage of the season.

"Our motto is survive and move on. We don't care how we win," she said, following a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds).

Indeed, the Cougars (16-4) are very much alive, and will face Bible Baptist-Harrisburg Academy Saturday in a quarterfinal at Northern York. Country Day reached the district semifinals a year ago.

While LCD jumped to a 16-3 halftime lead, Living Word was sweating it out just to find decent looks at the basket.

"We have struggled offensively, all year," Living Word coach Steph Bujdosova said outside the locker room. "That (16-3 lead) played mentally huge."

Janelle Hackman's 14-footer was all the Lions (12-11) could muster from the field in the opening half. The Cougars beat their marks to passing lanes all night and forced 17 turnovers, 10 in the first half.

When Living Word's guards did get past the perimeter pressure, Leslie stepped up in the paint.

"She's just a stopper," Waltman said of her 6-foot-1 center, who finished with four blocks.

The Lions finally showed a pulse midway through the third quarter when Janelle Dienner knocked down three straight treys to cut the deficit to 18-12. She ran off screens for two shots from the left wing, and buried another from the top of the key.

"She put that team on her shoulders," Waltman said.

Suddenly, it was Country Day that couldn't find the net. The Cougars went eight minutes without a field goal.

Waltman's call for a timeout proved to be just what the doctor ordered. "That was big for us," Leslie said.

The Cougars responded by keeping Living Word off the board the rest of the way. The Lions didn't score in the last 10:10.

Leslie responded with a pair of buckets in the post and a pair of free throws.

"I trusted our girls would make shots, but it just didn't happen," Bujdosova said. "I think (LCD) was beatable. We just haven't executed."
