Armstrong World Industries said Friday it will idle 440 workers in its residential hardwood flooring division, due to slumping demand.
The Lancaster-based firm said it will idle 260 workers at its Oneida, Tenn., plant and 180 workers at its Center, Texas, plant.
The layoffs are effective April 9.
Armstrong spokeswoman Beth Riley called the moves a "last resort."
Though the company has done "everything it can" to avoid layoffs, she said, demand for residential hardwood flooring continues to slide, both in the new construction and the repair/remodel markets.
That's left Armstrong with too much capacity, necessitating the layoffs, said Riley.
The layoffs will leave Armstrong with 110 workers at the Oneida plant and 60 at the Center plant.
Locally, Armstrong makes ceilings at its Marietta plant and vinyl flooring at its Lancaster plant, which is undergoing a $25 million renovation.
