Police said a Lancaster city detective was struck on the head with a skateboard during an assault Wednesday.
The detective was released from the hospital, and he was recovering at home Thursday.
The detective also was punched in the leg during the incident, which occurred after he stopped four male juveniles who were skateboarding on private property in the 300 block of North Christian Street, according to a news release issued Thursday.
When the detective tried to speak to the boys, one of them yelled obscenities and refused to follow his directives, police said. As he was attempting to arrest the individual, one of the other boys struck the detective on the head with a skateboard, police said.
During an ensuing struggle, the detective was hit in the leg by the individual he was trying to arrest, police said.
Police did not identify the detective but said he is a 10-year veteran of the city department.
Lt. Todd Umstead said the detective, who was on duty at the time of the incident, was not uniformed and was driving an unmarked police vehicle but "clearly identified himself as a police officer" when he approached the youths.
About 15 city officers responded to the incident and detained the four juveniles.
Two of the boys, both 15-year-old city residents, were charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct and were committed to Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, police said.
The other two, who did not participate in the assault, were released with no criminal charges. Police could not provide ages for those two boys Thursday.
