Melting snow and rain pushed the Susquehanna River to the top but not over its banks Tuesday, Marietta fire Chief Glenn Orr said Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service at State College, the river crested at 49.5 feet — 6 inches above flood stage — in Marietta at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Minor flooding occurred, but waters were expected to recede to well under flood level by midnight Wednesday, the National Weather Service reported.

A flood warning remained in effect Wednesday night.

Motorists are advised not to drive through flooded sections of roadways. Most deaths that occur during flooding are because drivers attempt to drive through flooded areas that are deeper than they appear, the National Weather Service said.

At flood stage, low lying areas on both the Lancaster and York sides of the river are affected.

Orr said the river would need to rise about another 10 feet before it would start coming up through the street drains in the town and cause flooding.

"We're in good shape," Orr said Tuesday afternoon.
