A Manheim Township neonatologist has agreed to serve eight years in prison and pay more than $7 million restitution for fraud.
Dr. Saroj Kumar Parida pleaded guilty recently in federal court to one count each of health care fraud and mail fraud.
At the time of Parida's arrest, state Attorney General Tom Corbett said the doctor submitted millions of dollars in fraudulent medical bills to Medicaid and insurance companies.
The negotiated sentence, which will be imposed officially in the spring, was a resolution of charges brought last April.
Parida, 49, of 760 Goose Neck Drive, Lititz, which is in Manheim Township's Bent Creek development, has paid $959,000 of the total $7,116,423 in restitution, prosecutors said.
Additionally, because the case was resolved in cooperation with federal authorities, Corbett spokesman Nils Frederiksen said investigators were able to seize $5,783,000 that Parida had in investments in Boston.
Prosecutors said Parida allegedly submitted claims to 19 different health insurance companies for services never rendered.
The restitution will be returned to state Medicaid programs and insurance companies that were defrauded by his false billing, Frederiksen said.
A neonatologist is a pediatric specialist trained to deal with medical problems of newborns.
