Jed Morris has two passions in life.
His first one, baseball, has allowed him to play from coast to coast for a variety of Oakland A's farm teams and last summer for the Lancaster Barnstormers.
It is his second passion, cancer research and recovery, that now holds a special place in his heart.
Morris, who hopes to be back with the Barnstormers this season, is a survivor of acute lymphocytic leukemia, which ravaged his system in 2006 and led to an extended hiatus from baseball while he went through six rounds of chemotherapy.
Morris, a catcher, missed almost all of the 2007 season. He played in the A's system for seven years until his release last March. He signed with Lancaster in April and decided it was time to start his organization in a city he grew to love.
Morris will host and participate in a Bowlerama at Leisure Lanes Saturday, Jan. 16. The money raised from the community event will go toward his organization, You and Me on a Comeback, which focuses on the well-being and full-spectrum rehabilitation of people who are in remission after going through cancer-associated treatments.
Morris is currently in talks with Lancaster General Hospital to be a partner in future cancer research and care ventures.
"I have gotten to know Jed, and we have met a number of times," said Jay Bucher, the hospital's vice president of development. "We are impressed with his passion and commitment to his cause. We will continue to work together to discuss future opportunities."
The money raised at Leisure Lanes will go toward expanding Morris' independent organization.
"I hope to connect with the hospital soon and make this event a fun, yearly activity," said Morris, who batted .249 with nine homers and 46 RBIs last season. "I was a community health major in college and this is a dream of mine. I hope to do this for many years to come."
The Bowlerama includes bowling throughout the day, with a special bowl-off in the evening. At 5:30 p.m., the event will feature five Barnstormers bowling against five members of the York Revolution.
Dave Collins, the radio voice of the Barnstormers, will do a frame-by-frame call of the match. Barnstormers manager Tom Herr will serve as the manager for Lancaster's bowling team, which includes Morris, Eric Ackerman, Matt Watson, Ross Peeples and former Barnstormer Bryan Sabatella.
The Revolution's bowling roster and manager are still being finalized, but Morris said each team will have a bullpen, with Lancaster's team including bullpen catcher Kevin Richards.
An umpire will call gutters and strikes, and Cylo, Hilda the Turkey from Turkey Hill and other guests will make appearances throughout the day. WROZ-FM 101.3 "The Rose" will also broadcast from the event.
"We will have someone bowl the ceremonial first ball, and we will all wear our jerseys," Morris said.
The regular bowling for charity includes matches at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Each team bowls two games, with trophies presented to the winners at the end of the day.
The cost is $50 per team or $10 per person, and you can sign up in advance or on Saturday at Leisure on a first-come, first-serve basis.
"You can come as an individual and we will find a team to put you on," Morris said.
There will be a silent auction and food available throughout the event.
