A woman driving to visit a patient at Ephrata Community Hospital was seriously injured Thursday morning when her SUV was struck in front of the hospital by a driver who ran a red light, according to Ephrata police.
The woman was headed east on Grandview Drive and entered the intersection with Route 272 around 8:10 a.m. when a man driving a minivan ran a red light and rammed the driver's side of the woman's vehicle, according to Officer Brandon Bartholomew.
The force of the collision flipped the woman's vehicle onto the passenger side and entrapped her.
Volunteers with Lincoln Fire Company had to cut off the roof of the vehicle to extricate the woman. She was transported the short distance to the hospital.
Bartholomew had not completed his investigation and couldn't provide the names of the two drivers. The woman was admitted to Ephrata Community Hospital after being taken there by Ephrata Rescue Services, but her injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
Police said the male driver, who was southbound on Route 272, will be cited for a red light violation.
Route 272 was closed for about an hour.
