If you're looking for the early storyline or buzz around the girls' basketball scene, look no farther than southern Lancaster County.

That's where the upstart Solanco Golden Mares play hoops — some really good hoops.

Monday night in Quarryville, the Mares dominated Cedar Crest in a 65-56 L-L League Sections One-Two crossover game.

It's the second crossover win for the Mares (2-0 L-L, 4-1 overall), who dropped Section One's other perennial power Hempfield last Friday.

"This isn't the same Solanco team as back in the day," said fourth-year coach Tom McDonald. "This is a new team, we have girls that care for one another and they work hard and that shows on the court."

It's a group of young girls with big-time talent. Just look at the starting five — a senior, three sophomores and a freshman.

One of those sophomores — Emily Allport — scored a career-high 20 points Monday to lead Solanco. Fellow soph Mackenzie Keys had 12, freshman Gillian Glackin had 14 and senior Taylor Kreider added 10.

"Our coaches knew the potential we had," Allport said. "We came into this game thinking we had to play like we did against Hempfield and have that same attitude."

The Mares jumped on Crest (1-1, 3-2) early and often, sprinting out to a 7-0 lead. The Falcons missed their first eight shots and had two turnovers before scoring their first points.

Meghan Phillips finally got the Falcons on the board with 4:25 left in the opening quarter. She added another bucket 35 seconds later, which was the 1,000th point of her career.

The eighth player in Cedar Crest history to reach a grand, Phillips did the best she could to keep the Falcons in the game as she finished with a game-high 26 points. She came into the game as the league's leading scorer with 22 per night.

Eventually, Solanco led 19-4 after one quarter. Allport and Keys each had five points in the quarter, while the Falcons hit only two of their first 16 shots.

"We got out to that big lead and my main concern was we were going to go into a funk and have to bail ourselves out, but we just kept going right along," said McDonald. "We got up on them early and we probably left another 14-16 points on the floor through the whole game."

After Phillips' historical basket, Crest went 6:03 without scoring, but did manage to close the half strong and trailed 34-20 at the break. A 6-1 run to start the second half made it a 35-26 game with 6:17 left in the third.

That's as close as the Falcons could get.

The Mares, up 11 after three, opened the final quarter with an 8-2 spurt that gave them their biggest lead, 56-39.

"I think beating two good teams like that brings us to know that we're actually a pretty god team," said Allport, who scored 12 of her points in the first half. "It will boost our confidence when we play against other teams."

Other teams that had better take notice of the Mares.
