2 charged in TV heist

A man and a woman were taken into custody Friday in Manor Township and accused of stealing three LCD TVs from the CVS store at 615 Locust St., Columbia.

Jose Mercado Cartagena, 26, Lancaster, and Angela Iquina, 30, Windsor, were stopped by Manor Township officers in the 2100 block of Columbia Avenue, Columbia Borough police said.

Cartagena was sent to Lancaster County Prison on felony retail theft charges after being arraigned by  District Judge Robert Herman, police said.

Felony charges for retail theft, DUI and driving with a suspended license are pending against Iquina, police said.

A woman accompanying the pair, Angelita Mercado-Hensley, 40, Lancaster, was committed to Lancaster County Prison on an outstanding warrant through Dauphin County, police said.

Columbia Borough police were called to the store about 3:50 p.m. and told that a man and woman had just taken the TVs and fled in an older white sedan.

A witness took down the license plate number, police said, and surrounding departments were advised to watch for the vehicle.

The officers who pulled over the trio could see the TVs in their car, police said.

•Rochella Marshall, 47, was picked up Friday afternoon after she allegedly stole several items from the Dollar General Store, 960 Lancaster Ave., Columbia, and then almost struck a store employee with her car, Columbia Borough police said.

The employee was trying to get a  description of the vehicle as it was driven away from the scene shortly after 4:15 p.m., according to police.

Marshall exited the parking lot and ran a red light as officers arrived, police said; she was stopped and found to be transporting a small child who was not secured in a child safety seat.

Marshall, who is from Columbia, was taken into custody and accused of felony retail theft and several traffic violations, police said. West Hempfield Township police assisted with the call.

TREE STAND THEFT:
A lock and a stick ladder were taken from a tree stand in a small wood patch in New Providence Township, state police at Lancaster said. The theft happened sometime between Dec. 8 and Thursday, police said. Anyone with information should call troopers at 299-7650.

•A 1989 Honda coupe belonging to a 22-year-old man was stolen in the 600 block of East Frederick Street between 1 and 5 a.m. Saturday, Lancaster police said.

•A 17-year-old Lancaster girl was arrested for retail theft after she activated a security alarm while exiting the Burlington Coat Factory, 2090 Lincoln Highway East, shortly before 5:45 p.m. Thursday, East Lampeter Township police said.

Police are accusing the girl of stealing merchandise worth $84.94 and hiding it in the bottom of a diaper bag.

•A 15-inch TV was stolen at about 9:18 p.m. Monday from the CVS store at 2020 Columbia Ave., Manor Township police said. The theft is still under investigation, but a suspect has been identified.

BAD CHECKS:
New Holland police are searching for a man who they say wrote two bad checks totaling more than $1,200.

On Dec. 4, Christopher M. Shields, 37, address unknown, paid for items at Andrew Jewelers, 912 W. Main St., Earl Township, with a check from a closed account, then left the store and wrote another such check to Snap-on Tools while the driver was at a business at 1020 W. Main St., police said.

Shields has ties to the Gap area and Chester County, according to police. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact Detective Jonathan Heisse at 354-4547, ext. 336, or their local police department.

LOST, THEN FOUND:
Police in Penn Township searched Saturday evening for an elderly woman who reportedly wandered away from Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The woman was located and was safe Saturday night, according to a woman who answered the phone at the facility.

Ronald Waack, president and CEO of Pleasant View, declined to elaborate, except to say that the elderly woman was with her family.

Penn Township police could not be reached for comment.

ACCIDENTS:
Luz M. Natal, 40, Lancaster, was eastbound on Route 30 at Township Drive, Paradise Township, when she lost control of her vehicle and hit a rock wall on the north shoulder of the highway, state police at Lancaster said. The accident happened about 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Natal and her passenger, Carlos A. Gomez, 35, Lancaster, were taken to Lancaster General Hospital by Gordonville EMS for minor injuries, police said.

•A vehicle driven by Viraj Khedekar, 21, of Hill Road in New Holland, slid off a snow-covered road Saturday in Earl Township and broke off a telephone pole, New Holland police said. The crash happened shortly before noon in the 200 block of Tabor Road. No injuries were reported.

•Two drivers escaped injury Thursday in an accident on the Route 340 exit ramp at Route 30 East in East Lampeter Township.

The crash happened about 5:30 p.m. when a vehicle driven by Kelsey J. Kendrick, 18, Lancaster, rear-ended a vehicle operated by Jessica L. Adamine, 25, police said. Adamine had stopped to yield to traffic, according to police.

•A westbound vehicle driven by David A. Swiger, 26, struck a forklift operated by Aaron J. King, 48, shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday in the 200 block of Newport Road, Leola, East Lampeter Township police said.

Swiger was taken to Lancaster General Hospital by Leola Ambulance, police said, and his vehicle was towed.

King was at fault in the accident because the forklift did not display proper lights or a slow-moving vehicle emblem, police said.

Both men are from Leola.

•A snowmobile driven by Glenn Sweitzer, 51, of the first block of Reamstown Road, collided with a vehicle driven by Christina Shiplett, 28, also of Reamstown, shortly before 5:40 p.m. Saturday on North Reamstown Road, East Cocalico Township police said.

The snowmobile, which crossed into Shiplett's path, was heavily damaged and was towed, police said.

Sweitzer suffered cuts on his head and was taken by ambulance to Lancaster General Hospital, police said; charges are pending blood/alcohol test results.

Shiplett was not injured, and her car was driven from the scene, police said.

•Travis R. Fultz, 20, of Birdsboro, accelerated while pulling out of the Turkey Hill parking lot near routes 23 and 10, Caernarvon Township, drove over the curb, fish-tailed and struck a tree at 9:05 p.m. Thursday, state police at Ephrata said.

ARRESTS:
Police said they arrested Candido A. Rivera, 25, of the 300 block of East Frederick Street, on a warrant at around 3:30 a.m. Friday in the 100 block of South Ann Street after officers responded to the report of a fight. Rivera paid the warrants and was released, police said.

KEY IN LOCK:
City police cited a 20-year-old man early Friday for leaving his key in the ignition of a vehicle –– a violation of a city ordinance –– in the 600 block of North Franklin Street.

CRITICAL:
Peach Bottom resident Jay M. Kreider Jr., 53, who was injured Thursday in a vehicle crash on Twin  County Road, Caernarvon Township, remained in critical condition Saturday night at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said.

Kreider's vehicle hit a patch of ice and collided with a vehicle driven by Christian H. O'Rourke III, 28, Elverson, state police said.

DRINKING CHARGES:
Anthony Nelson, 29, of the 600 block of Almanac Avenue, was cited for public drunkenness at 1:18 a.m. Friday in the first block of East Filbert Street, police said.

•Adam M. Straub, 26, York Springs, and Marcy A. Dull, 21, of the 200 block of North Maple Street, Ephrata, were taken into custody during a traffic stop shortly after 1 a.m. Friday in the 700 block of New Holland Avenue, city police said. Straub was cited for public drunkenness, and Dull was to be cited for public drunkenness, police said.
