Police said a 17-year-old Adamstown resident walked to safety Monday night after his sport utility vehicle splashed into Little Cocalico Creek in Denver Borough.
The teenager lost control of his Toyota 4Runner on Weaver Road, just off Main Street, police said. The vehicle traveled a short distance before going off the road and down an embankment into the 4-foot-deep water.
The teen crawled out of the vehicle and walked a short distance to Denver Beer Distributor to report the crash, which occurred shortly before 6 p.m., East Cocalico Township police Officer Bob Good said.
While the teen was gone, two officers discovered the wreck and entered the water to make sure no one was in the vehicle, he said.
Good said the boy appeared to be uninjured but was taken to Ephrata Community Hospital for evaluation.
The teen told police that he lost control while driving across a steel bridge. Good said the wet roadway might have been a factor in the crash.
Good said there were no skid marks on the road.
The vehicle was removed from the water by a large tow truck, which hoisted it over the tall shrubbery that lines the berm of the road.
Fire and rescue crews remained at the scene until about 8:30 p.m.
