Lancaster Catholic and Manheim Central stayed alive in the District 3 football playoffs with victories Friday night, which is reason enough to celebrate.

But both playoff wins featured a pair of personal milestones -- one for Catholic quarterback Kyle Smith, and the other for Central coach Mike Williams.

Smith broke Pat Devlin's state record for career passing yards late in the second quarter of the Crusaders' 42-6 victory over Delone Catholic in Hersheypark Stadium, connecting with wideout Tyler Purvis for a 31-yard touchdown. That throw pushed Smith's total for the night to 162 yards. He entered the game needing 160 to catch Devlin's state mark of 8,162.

Smith finished with 170 passing yards and four touchdowns as the Crusaders romped to their second straight district crown. Next up for Catholic: A PIAA quarterfinal matchup against the District 4 champion -- either Lewisburg or Loyalsock -- next Friday at 7 p.m. in Shamokin. Lewisburg and Loyalsock square off Saturday for the District 4 crown.

Smith also needs just three touchdowns to tie the state record for TD passes in a single season.

Meanwhile, Williams collected his 300th career coaching victory in Manheim Central's 42-7 rout of Conrad Weiser in the District 3 Class AAA semifinals. The Barons improved to 12-0 this season, and boosted Williams' record to 300-59-3 in his 29th season at Central's helm.

The Barons will try to capture their record 16th District 3 championship next Friday in Hersheypark Stadium against Susquehanna Township, a 7-6 winner over West York in Friday night's other semifinal clash. That game will kick off at 7 p.m.
