On the night Millersville honored its women's basketball past, it may have unveiled a star of the future.
Her name is Mashira Newman.
The 5-7 guard filled up the stat sheet against Lock Haven Saturday night. She finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals as MU cruised to a 72-52 victory at Pucillo Gym.
"I knew Shira and I knew how quick she was," said Lock Haven coach Jen Smith, a Millersville grad. "But I didn't know she could shoot as well as she did tonight. She's a great player and she's going to get better and better."
That's Millersville's hope.
Newman is a redshirt freshman from Upper Dublin High in Fort Washington. She has been Millersville's leading scorer in each of her first two college games and has played with a poise not often seen in players so inexperienced.
"That's just me," Newman said. "I'm a smooth and calm person. Sometimes I might get hyped, but not all the time."
Newman connected on 7 of 11 shots in her 33 minutes. She scored 16 points in the first half, including the first six points of the game.
MU coach Mary Fleig saw star potential when she recruited Newman, whose older sister, Monica, also plays for the team and whose cousin, Darlene, is an assistant coach.
"We had those aspirations for Shira to do what she can do," Fleig said. "It's fun to see it come this quick."
Prior to tip-off, Millersville celebrated its storied women's basketball history. MU presented its All-75th Season Team and paid tribute to the championship teams of the past, including the three that won PSAC titles.
"It was really cool," said Fleig, who has been at the school since 1990 and has earned the most coaching wins in MU women's hoops history.
"I've been waiting for that to happen for so many months. It was a great opportunity for us to recognize. It says a lot for this program, which was established way before I got here."
After the ceremony was over, Millersville came out of the gates firing. The Marauders opened with an 18-3 run over the first 10 minutes and never allowed Lock Haven to pull closer than six points the rest of the way.
Lock Haven couldn't overcome its early struggles. The Eagles missed their first 10 field goal attempts and only shot 21.8 percent for the game.
"We couldn't put the ball in the basket," Smith said. "When you can't score, it kind of kills your momentum."
Millersville KO'ed Lock Haven midway through the second half. After the Eagles crawled within 51-42 with 11:33 left, the Marauders went on a 14-0 run that sealed it.
MU has opened the season with back-to-back lopsided wins. It clobbered the University of the District of Columbia by 36 points in the season opener Friday night.
The biggest story of the first weekend has been the emergence of Newman, who said she benefited from sitting out last season and watching the other guards, including former McCaskey star Jenna Philo.
That has helped Newman make an immediate impact.
"I'm lucky to have her on our team," Fleig said.
MU's coach may make that statement quite a few times over the next four years.
