A Leola family was playing cards early Sunday morning when suddenly the kitchen cabinet doors flew open.

"I told you this house was haunted," Dina Troxell said she joked to her relatives.

In reality, a car had crashed into the foundation of Troxell's home, along Route 772, just off Main Street in Leola.

The driver, David Christopher Kowalski, 40, of Harrisburg, was taken to Lancaster General Hospital after the accident early Sunday morning, police said.

A hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday she had no information about Kowalski.

East Lampeter Township police Sgt. Marlene Leighty said Kowalski apparently drove from the parking lot of Helen's Corner Bar, at Main Street and Glenbrook Road, at about 1 a.m.

Kowalski apparently lost control of his car as he crossed Glenbrook Road, also known as Route 772, when he swerved through a line of shrubbery and crashed into the Troxell home.

Police said the car hit the side of the home but did not break into the interior of the residence.

Dina Troxell, who lives at the home with her husband, Thomas, and infant son, said they had relatives visiting for the weekend.

As they sat in the dining room playing cards, they heard the crash that caused the kitchen cupboards to rattle and the doors to fly open.

The car, Dina Troxell said, apparently hit the foundation and crawl space of the property.

Firefighters had the occupants evacuate the property while they examined the structure, Dina Troxell said. On Monday, she said, a gas line had to be moved.

"We just feel lucky no one was hurt," Dina Troxell said.

After the crash, police said they searched unsuccessfully for Kowalski's passenger while ambulance personnel tended to the driver.

Dina Troxell said she and other neighbors are concerned about problems associated with the corner bar and were considering contacting local and state officials.

A spokeswoman at the tavern Wednesday afternoon had no comment about the incident or the neighbors.
