The drama was set Friday night in Annville, as Lancaster Catholic traveled to meet the Little Dutchmen of Annville-Cleona.

What drama, you ask, when a team who is undefeated in Section Three plays a 3-3 team?

How about the top-ranked passer in the L-L League, who was on the threshold of setting a state record for most passing touchdowns in a career, and one of the top running backs in the section about to surpass the 1,000-yard mark?

Both players hit their mark, but in the end it was the Crusaders (6-0 Section Three, 8-1 overall) defeating the Dutchmen, 49-7. The victory clinched a share of the section title for the Crusaders.

Lancaster Catholic quarterback Kyle Smith wasted little time etching his name in the record books, as he connected with Kevin Cotchen on a 10-yard pass on his sixth offensive play to pass former Manheim Township standout and Pitt Panther, Pat Bostick as the state's all-time leader in passing touchdowns with 5:04 left in the first quarter.

Smith's TD pass actually pulled the Crusaders within one point as the Dutchmen scored the game's first touchdown on a 69-yard drive that was capped by Rickey Snyder's 12-yard run.

Snyder finished the game with 80 unofficial yards, to put him over the 1,000-yard mark this season.

Smith, who threw five TD passes in the game to lift his career total to 99, finished with 242 yards by completing 13 of 17 attempts.

"The pressure didn't bother me too much," said Smith. "My teammates kept things loose this week. It is great to share this with such a great bunch of guys."

Catholic scored on passes of 10, 31, 17, 67 and 30 yards from Smith to a host of receivers, including two to Tyler Purvis, one to Quinn Houser and one each to Jordan Stewart and Cotchen.

Sandwiched in among the passing touchdowns was a 15-yard scamper by Stewart and a 61-yard interception return by Trevor St. Clair.

"It's been tough this week for our kids, especially Smith, with all the media coverage," said Catholic coach Bruce Harbach. "But all he (Smith) cares about is a 'W' at the end of the game."

Catholic plays Elco next Friday for the outright Section Three Championship and Smith is ready.

"All we have to do is focus and I will take responsibility and we should be OK." said Smith.
