Conestoga Township will uphold a ban against rock climbing along its portion of the abandoned low-grade Enola rail line.
Township supervisors told residents of the decision at their meeting last Tuesday after two unidentified visitors commented about the ban along the line, which is being converted into a 23-mile recreational rail trail.
The issue, according to supervisors, has little to do with the rules of the township, but has instead been put in place by Amtrak, which still holds a right-of-way easement on the land.
"As long as they (Amtrak) say no to rock climbing, then we agree," said Supervisor Steve Charles. "They may allow it after they move some of the power lines (an event expected to take place in December 2010), but for right now, the ban is still in place."
The supervisors, Charles said, would be willing to reverse the ban on rock-climbing on their portion of the trail, but only if Amtrak drops the ban.
"If Amtrak came and said it was OK, we'd be fine with it," Charles said. "But for us right now, we're still at the start of our relationship with Amtrak, and we want to keep things cordial."
People who want to contact Amtrak about rock climbing along the trail can do so by sending a letter to AMTRAK, National Railroad Passenger Corp., 60 Massachusetts Ave. N.E., Washington, D.C. 20002-4225.
In other township news, Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company will hold a fundraising dinner Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Conestoga Fire Hall, 3290 Main St., Conestoga.
Fire Chief Larry Frankford Jr. said the dinner is being held as a general fundraiser for the fire company.
"It's a ham supper with mashed potatoes, carrots and homemade filling, plus a drink — including coffee, juice or water — and a choice of dessert," he said.
The cost is $9 for adults and $4.50 for children ages 3 to 12. Take-out meals are available for $9. For more information, call 871-1351.
