A fire policeman from Elizabethtown was injured when a hit-and-run motorist's car dragged him 20 to 30 feet Thursday night.

Robert Dougherty, 46, was directing traffic at 10:30 p.m. along Route 230 at Toll House Road in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, because of an earlier crash, state police said.

The suspect's car was traveling west very fast on Route 230 as he approached the fire policeman, police said. His car struck several orange cones and nearly hit a passing motorcyclist before coming to a halt.

Dougherty, wearing a reflective jacket, approached the suspect and directed him to pull over to the side of the road, police said.

When Dougherty began to speak to him, the suspect suddenly pulled away, police said. Dougherty was somehow caught by the car and dragged 20 to 30 feet before he was able to jump away.

The suspect's car sped away on Toll House Road and entered Route 283 westbound, police said.

The suspect was described as a white man in his 20s to early 30s, with short hair and a thin build. His car is an older red or burgundy sedan, possibly a Chevrolet Cavalier or Corsica, with a Pennsylvania license number beginning "GTA," police said.

State police ask that anyone with information about the incident call 671-7500 and reference incident number H01-1887702.
