A collision of a car and a personal mobility scooter left an Ephrata man hospitalized Friday.

David Bair, 72, of Ephrata, was driving his personal mobility scooter southbound along North Church Street around 11:30 a.m. when the accident occurred.

"He was coming from Redner's Market," said Ephrata police Sgt. Philip Snavely.

A southbound car driven by John Risser, 81, of Ephrata, crested a small hill and struck Bair's scooter from the rear.

The stretch of road where the accident occurred has no sidewalk, forcing Bair to drive his scooter on the shoulder of the road.

Bair was taken by Ephrata Ambulance to Lancaster General Hospital. His mangled scooter lay against a grassy bank, while bags of groceries lay strewn along the shoulder.

An LGH nursing supervisor said Bair was in serious condition.

Snavely said the cause of the accident is under investigation.

"We haven't interviewed Mr. Bair yet," Snavely said. "Our first priority was getting him treated."
