A man died in an early morning blaze in a Columbia Borough home Saturday.

The name of the victim was not immediately available from fire officials or the coroner. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

The victim apparently was alone in the home at 1114 Lancaster Ave., according to Jeff Helm, borough zoning and planning officer. "To my knowledge, he was the only one inside," he said.

Susquehanna Fire Company responded to a 2:39 a.m. call. State police fire marshals are investigating the blaze.

The fire started in a first-floor kitchen area and then moved to the second floor of the single-family home, said Susquehanna Fire Company Assistant Chief Mike Stock. Damage to the 2½-story frame structure and its contents was estimated at $75,000.

The blaze was contained in 20 or 30 minutes, Stock added. "It didn't really take long for us to put it out."

The structure was "pretty well burned out on the inside," Helm said. "It's going to need a tremendous amount of restoration."

In addition to Susquehanna, firefighters from Columbia, West Hempfield and Wrightsville responded to the scene.
