Muddy conditions at the 60th annual Southern Lancaster County Community Fair caused the popular tractor pull to be postponed until tonight, but all the other events went on as planned.

"That track is just too soupy," said Rick Rankin, fair association president. "The weather sounds good for Friday. We lucked out. The parade went very well. The vendors all said they did very well Wednesday night."

Light showers and damp conditions kept the fair kitchen booming.

"I haven't been able to keep chicken corn soup. It's just unreal," said Kay Douts. The volunteers sold 12 16-quart kettles of chicken corn soup in 45 minutes.

"I get it made, and it goes. It must be the weather," Douts added.

Several food vendors said yesterday's dreary weather definitely affected business.

"Sales were a little slower than last year," Ike Metzler, a Robert Fulton Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star volunteer, said.

Kim Rankin, who represented the Solanco Fair Association milkshake stand, said, "In general, we're slower than a typical year. I'd say weather has a lot to do with it."

It was touch and go for the baby parade until clearer evening skies allowed the event to go on as planned. The grand prize winner of the float division was Olivia Yoder, daughter of Troy and Dana Yoder of Leola. Olivia was the operator of her very own bulldozer.

The grand-prize winners of the walking division were Anna and Josiah Fite, children of Bruce and Devon Fite of Nottingham. Dressed as chefs, the children portrayed the theme "Chicken Noodle Soup."

Landon Welk, the son of Andy and Becky Welk of Quarryville, was the grand champion of the vehicle-on-wheels division with a "Not So Scary Scarecrow" theme.
