Traffic in and out of Quarryville was bumper-to-bumper Wednesday evening despite a light rain that did little to spoil the mood of those going to the 60th annual Southern Lancaster County Community Fair.

The bottom line for those who return each year is the good food and the camaraderie.

"The food and seeing the people from one year to the next is what brings us here," said Trudy Carrigan of Tayloria.

Food sales were brisk. Anna Mary Glick, who worked in the fair kitchen making large vats of chicken potpie, said sales were "wonderful."

"We've used 50-plus buckets (containing two to three gallons each) of chicken broth and 120 pounds of chicken," she said. "People are really eating."

Jay Gicker, working alongside Glick, said, "What surprises me are the repeat people that come back to the (kitchen sales) window."

Robert Black, who chairs the Quarryville Lions Club french fry stand, said business was strong.

"Our club greatly appreciates the community support. This year we're working hard and dedicating our effort to Ben Herr, a longstanding member who recently passed away. Ben helped start our french fry business," he said.

Dawn Hess, a Lampeter resident, said she attends the fair because "it's habit. We've always come."

"It's nice to see the different businesses," added Robert Hess.

Quarryville resident Melissa Corbin said the fair is a good deal for the whole family.

"It's fun for the kids, and I get pens and pads to last me for the rest of the year."

The parade was a big draw.

"We come every year," said Nicole Underwood of New Providence. "It's nostalgic, and we also love the fair food."

Fortunately, the weather held out for the parade.

"It was a very light drizzle at the start of the parade. Once the parade started, the rain stopped and it was just cloudy. It worked out well," said Grant Jackson, parade coordinator.
