A 58-year-old man was killed late Thursday night along Route 283 near Mount Joy after being ejected from a wrecked SUV and then struck by two other vehicles, police said.
Roger W. Gelnett of Harrisburg was pronounced dead at the accident scene by Lancaster County Deputy Coroner Kelli Lingg.
State police said Friday they were searching for a dark-colored pickup truck, one of the two vehicles that struck Gelnett.
Gelnett was a passenger in a 2006 Honda CRV driven by Donna F. Welborn, 62, of Harrisburg, police said.
They were traveling west on Route 283 in the right lane, police said. At 11:49 p.m., the SUV struck a guide rail on the north shoulder of the road in the area of the Strickler Road overpass in Rapho Township.
The SUV then veered back across both lanes and struck the guide rail on the south shoulder of the roadway, police said. It became airborne and rotated multiple times before coming to rest in the center grass median.
During the collision, Gelnett was ejected into the center of Route 283 East, where two eastbound vehicles then struck him, police said.
Welborn suffered moderate injuries in the wreck and was taken to Hershey Medical Center, police said. She is listed in critical condition.
Welborn and Gelnett were not wearing seat belts.
Police located one vehicle that struck Gelnett, they said.
They said anyone who witnessed the accident or has information about the pickup should call state police Cpl. Mark Magyar at 299-7650.
Route 283 East was closed for about five hours and westbound travel was limited to one lane while the investigation was conducted and wreckage cleared, police said.
State police were assisted at the scene by the Mount Joy Fire Department, Hempfield Fire Department, Susquehanna Valley EMS and Northwest EMS.
