Lancaster reliever Neal Musser had not given up a home run since signing with the Barnstormers on June 24. That changed on Tuesday in Newark. Tike Redman hit a two-run, seventh-innng homer off Musser breaking a 2-2 tie to lead the Bears to a 4-2 win over the Barnstormers at Bears and Eagles Stadium.
Musser (0-1), making his 13th appearance for Lancaster, relieved 'Stormers starter Jason Scobie. After getting the first two Bears batters in the seventh on grounders to third, Musser walked Charlton Jimerson. Redman then followed with his homer.
With the win, Newark clinches the season series 11-7 meaning they would own the tiebreaker if the two clubs would finish with the same record and be in-line for a playoff spot.
The Barnstormers had a chance in the ninth inning when Newark closer Armando Benitez walked two with two outs. But Michael Woods struck out to end the game and Benitez got his 13th save. Woods' strikeout left Lancaster 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the game.
Lancaster had tied the game 2-2 with a run in the top of the seventh. Ryan Mulhern walked and went to third on a hit-and-run single by Cesar Suarez. Lloyd Turner singled to score Mulhern.
Lancaster had a chance to get more after Anderson Machado walked to load the bases. But Newark reliever Michael Nix (3-0) got Woods to pop to second and L.J. Biernbaum to fly to center.
Lancaster also left the bases loaded in the fourth inning when they scored an unearned without a hit off Newark starter Kyle Kobernus. Woods reached on an error and Kobernus walked Biernbaum and Aaron Herr.
Nate Gold's sacrifice fly scored Woods to cut Newark's lead to 2-1. After Mulhern pop out to the shortstop, Gerard Haran walked to re-load the bases. But Kobernus got Suarez to fly out to center the inning.
Newark took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when D'Angelo Jimenez, who had been playing for Veracruz in the Mexican League, homered following a walk to Tike Redman. It was Jimenez's first Atlantic Lague at-bat.
The two first-innning tallies were the only runs Newark scored off Scobie, who pitched six innings, giving up three hits, walking three and striking out five.
Scobie walked the bases loaded with one out in the third inning, but pitched out of it by getting Sandy Madera on a comebacker to the mound and Rob Mackowiak on a fly to right.
Lancaster allowed a scoring opportunity to slip away in the third. Herr, who had two of the Barnstormers four hits, doubled with one out and went to third on a wild pitch. But he was stranded, one of 10 Barnstormers left on base, when Kobernus retired Gold on a dribbler in front of the plate and Mulhern on a line drive to third.
The Barnstormers have two more games at Newark before returning home Friday for a six-game homestand.
