If this year's Manheim Township-Hempfield showdown for the first PIAA District Three title wasn't an indication that the L-L League has the best boys' lacrosse teams in the district, the District Three All-Star team selections were.
The L-L League placed seven players, out of 16 spots, on the District Three All-Star team.
Highlighting the All-Star selections were Manheim Township's Dan Wertz and Nick Sizemore and Penn Manor's Pete Deluca, all of whom earned All-America honors.
Wertz, who was also named the District Three Player of the Year, led the Blue Streaks to a fourth consecutive district title and a fourth trip to the league finals.
The midfielder, who is headed to Ohio State to continue his athletic and academic careers, finished the season with 50 goals and 21 assists.
Wertz's 163 career goals rank him fourth all-time at MT while his 55 assists and 218 total points are the sixth and fifth best at Township.
Wertz was also an accomplished football player, earning all-league honors as both a running back (twice) and punter.
Sizemore garnered his All-America honor at face-off. The Township graduate won 72 percent of his face-offs this season.
Sizemore finished his career holding five team records in ground balls in a season and career, highest face-off winning percentage and face-offs won in a season and career. He also added 18 goals and 15 assists in his career.
It's on the gridiron, though, where Sizemore is at his best. A Second-Team All-State linebacker selection, Sizemore has accepted a football scholarship to Buffalo.
"I have great respect for him because lacrosse is only a hobby for him," said MT coach Rich Lefever. "His money is in football and he still puts the extra time in lacrosse to be the best at it."
Wertz and Sizemore become the eighth and ninth lacrosse players at Township to be named All-Americans. They join Chris Rommel in 2003, Eric Graupensberger in 2004, Paddy McKendry and Aaron Weber in 2006, John DuBois and Tim Stratton in 2007 and Chris Zielinski last season.
Playing with talented players since his freshman season benefited Wertz the most, according to Lefever.
"Watching how they practice and how they work helped Danny," Lefever said. "He had the luxury of playing with Weber, DuBois, Stratton and Zielinski. The on-the-field instructions he got from those guys is invaluable."
Deluca, who just finished his junior season, was a surprise selection as an underclassman since a player can be named an All-American only once.
A two-time First-Team All-L-L League selection, Deluca finished 2009 with a .670 save percentage after saving 70 percent as a sophomore.
"The thing that I love about Pete, and what makes him a great goalie, is that he has everything a coach wants," Lefever said. "He's lean and long, has fast hands and keeps (Penn Manor) in every game."
Deluca is the second Comet selected as an All-American, joining Jason Trump in 2007.
All three All-Americans were selected as MVP's at their respective positions in District Three. MT's Conner DuBois was a Co-MVP at attack. Other L-L League picks were Hempfield's Mason Risner at midfield, and Township's Austin Schultz and Lancaster Country Day's Bryce Carson on defense.
Former Penn Manor coach Chris Snyder could not be reached at press time.
