Rachael Rosenfield was so out of breath, you would have thought she had just scaled a mountain.

Fitting since she helped the Manheim Township girls' lacrosse team reach a new height Saturday afternoon in State College.

Rosenfield scored three goals in the Streaks' dominant first half that proved to be too much for Peters Township in a 13-10 PIAA quarterfinal win at Memorial Field.

"She's having a breathing problem," MT coach Lisa Lyons said as her star attacker limped toward the Streaks' team bus.

The junior had no such trouble on the field. Rosenfield scored one of the three goals MT tallied in the first 91 seconds of the game. The quick start proved to be the difference, as the Indians late-game rally fell short.

The Streaks (20-4) march on to Tuesday's state semifinals where they will face Radnor, a program ranked among the nation's Top 10 before playoffs began.

"Everyday we are setting a new record," said Lyons, who has led her team to the school's first-ever trips to district and state playoffs. MT won the District Three crown earlier this month.

Sophomore Molly Curcio scored four goals for the Streaks, including their third of the game on a high shot that beat Indians' goalie Corey Sam.

Curcio scored the last goal of the first half, taking a nice feed from Devon Schneider and again beating Sam to make it 8-3 with 3:26 on the clock.

The Indians (15-7) responded in the second half, netting the first two goals of the half and three more in a three-minute span late in the game.

Peters Township had three girls with multiple goals - Ellie Hanlon (4), Jules Ferniani (3), Lauren Ray (2). However, the Indians struggled making passes, especially early. Ray, the team's catalyst, scored both goals, practically on her own, fighting off Streaks defenders for shots.

Exhausted and excited, Manheim Township's girls and their coach are trying to keep a level head for Tuesday's matchup, which, on paper, has the streaks looking like David squared up against Radnor.

"Its just great to be one of the top four teams in the state. We didn't know we would make it this far," Rosenfield said between deep breaths after the win. "I'm excited, but there's always nerves in there."

Curcio concurred: "We are excited but we know we have tough competition ahead. We are just trying to stay focused."

That seems to be the credo installed by Lyons. "We are just trying to play the way we have" all season, she said.
