A 9-year-old Lancaster city girl was shot and killed while playing with friends and relatives Sunday in York city, according to reports.

Ciara Savage was shot in the back about 2:30 p.m. and died a short time later at York Hospital, according to the York Daily Record.

The girl was visiting her aunt, Tracy DeShields, when she was wounded in the 500 block of South Duke Street, apparently caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting, the York Dispatch reported.

"They said she never cried — she just said 'Uncle Marky,'!\p" Tracy DeShields told the Dispatch.

DeShields' nephew, Marcus DeShields, drove the girl to York Hospital, where she died of a single gunshot wound to the back, according to York City Police Lt. Tim Utley.

Ciara lived in Lancaster city but had been visting York about every other weekend, relatives told the Dispatch.

Investigators recovered a vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting, but had made no arrests as of late Sunday night, according to the Dispatch. That vehicle was being searched at press time.

Neighbors reported hearing as many as eight shots. Police confirmed the little girl wasn't an intended target.

"She was truly an innocent bystander," Utley told the Dispatch.

The girl was among a group of children playing on scooters when the shots rang out, the Dispatch reported.

"I just looked out, and she was laying on the pavement," Tracy DeShields told the Dispatch.

Jonae DeShields, 12, a cousin of Ciara, told the Dispatch she was walking in the front door to their home when the gunfire started.

"I just heard a bunch of gunshots and I saw my cousin fall to the ground," Jonae said.

The shooting occurred only blocks from the Olde York Street Fair on Market Street in York Sunday afternoon.

Police cordoned off the 500 block of South Duke Street after the shooting and marked several spots along the street with orange cones and green spray-paint. While police investigated, a blue scooter stood abandoned in the middle of the sidewalk.

Candi Allen, who lives on the 500 block of South Duke Street, heard the gunshots as she was watching television. She said gunshots are not uncommon in that section of the city, but they have never been so close to her home.

"They were so loud," she told the Dispatch. "It was crazy. I can still hear them."

Anyone with information about the shooting is being asked to call the York City Police Department at 849-2219 or 849-2204.
