A two-vehicle wreck just east of Intercourse in Leacock Township claimed the lives of three people Sunday night.
Two pickup trucks collided and became entangled in the 4100 block of Old Philadelphia Pike east of New Holland Road at 7 p.m.
The names of those involved in the wreck and what caused the crash were not available by press time. State police were on the scene still investigating the wreck three and a half hours after it occurred.
One pickup truck appeared to have T-boned the other as they became entangled and came to rest along the westbound berm.
The body of a passenger in one pickup truck was visible an hour after the wreck from the lawn of the Country Knives shop, where emergency personnel kept about 50 bystanders, mostly Amish, away from the wreck scene.
The deputy coroner arrived shortly after 8 p.m.
Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency in a news release said victims were taken to Lancaster General and Reading Hospital. Two helicopters were involved in transporting the injured.
Police arrived on the scene to find six people trapped inside the wreckage, county EMA said. They closed the 4100 block of Old Philadelphia Pike.
Jason Stoltzfus, 26, of Smoketown said he was traveling when he came upon the wreck. Stoltzfus said four people were inside one of the pickup trucks, two were in the other and "one girl lay on the road."
About six people including Stoltzfus used fire extinguishers to squelch smoke coming from the hoods of the trucks and helped victims until emergency responders arrived, Stoltzfus said.
"They were serious," Stoltzfus said about the victims' injuries.
