A 21-year-old Lancaster man drove himself to the hospital after he was shot in the chest at a home in the 400 block of Pershing Avenue at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Lancaster police said.
Three men and two women were in the home at the time of the shooting. The victim was outside the screen door, arguing with one of the men when Jermaine Maldonado, 21, of Lancaster, fired a single gunshot through the storm door, police said.
The victim's injury did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
Police searched the home and found two handguns, a .357 caliber revolver and a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun. Detectives believe one of the guns was used in the shooting, but did not say which one.
Maldonado was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and criminal attempt to commit homicide. He was taken to Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail.
One resident of the block, who did not wish to be identified, said he overheard several people arguing in Spanish over money before the shooting.
A witness saw a bloody sweatshirt, blood and a bullet casing on the street.
ACCIDENT VICTIM CRITICAL: Three people were injured, one critically, in a two-vehicle collision Friday in East Cocalico Township.
East Cocalico police Sgt. Raymond Burns said a car traveling southbound on Line Road was struck broadside by a pickup truck traveling east on Short Road in Stevens.
The impact of the 6:45 p.m. crash pushed the car off the road onto the southeast shoulder. The pickup truck came to rest in the intersection, blocking traffic.
Burns said a female passenger in the car — identified by East Cocalico Officer Gail Sizer on Saturday as Kelly Haller, 43, of Adamstown — was flown to Reading Hospital by PennSTAR helicopter. She suffered serious facial injuries and other trauma, Burns said. A hospital spokeswoman said Haller remained in critical condition Saturday morning.
The male driver of the car, Paul Ream, 47, of Adamstown, was treated and released at Ephrata Community Hospital. A 6-year-old girl in the rear of the Ream car was taken to Hershey Medical Center. She was released after an overnight stay, Sizer said.
The driver of the pickup, Travis Musser, 18, Fredericksburg, and an 18-year-old female passenger declined medical treatment at the scene. Sizer said Musser suffered a laceration on one arm and the female complained of jaw pain.
Responding to the accident were ambulances from Ephrata, Reinholds and Reamstown; East Cocalico police; Stevens and Denver fire companies; and Medic One.
