Lancaster County is no longer a region in the Scholastic Art Award competition, but that doesn't mean there won't be an opportunity to see the terrific work students are creating throughout the county.

The Lancaster County Young Artists was formed to replace the Scholastics, and its exhibit opened today at both locations of the Lancaster Museum of Art, 135 N. Lime St. and 215 N. Queen St.

One hundred of the gold winners, including special awards, are on display at the Lime Street location.

At the Queen Street location show visitors will find the remainder of the golds and silver winners, which number about 280, along with the exhibition awards, which replace honorable mentions.

Several new special awards are featured this year.

Five Awards of Excellence were given for outstanding pieces in the show, and Merit Awards were given in 10 categories.

Like the Scholastics of past years, the exhibit is chock-full of creative work from students in grades seven through 12.

Approximately 2,500 pieces were entered in the competition, and between 950 and 975 were accepted.

The exhibit runs through March 29. A First Friday reception will be held at both locations from 5 to 8 p.m.

The show is dedicated to Lester Miller, an art teacher in the Manheim Central School District and a longtime judge, who died in July.

Here is a list of the awards given out by the Lancaster County Young Artists:
