One of the most popular New Year's resolutions is to lose weight. If you have resolved to drop extra pounds in 2009, you don't have to tackle it alone; Sylvia can join you in the battle of the bulge.
This 6-year-old feline is an affectionate girl who would much rather curl up on the couch and snack on cat treats straight out of the bag than chase a mouse.
Sylvia is such a couch potato that instead of pattering around our cat facility on her own four paws, she prefers to be pulled around in a little red wagon.
Sylvia enjoys the company of other cats, and dogs don't seem to faze her. Already spayed, front declawed, and litter-box trained, Sylvia is an all-in-one package of love who is ready to start the New Year on the right paw!
Sylvia is available for adoption at the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Highway East. Many of our available animals can also be viewed online at
www.humaneleague.com.
Regular shelter hours are noon to 6 p.m. Monday; noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Friday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The shelter is closed Wednesday. Call the league at 393-6551.
From Dec. 23-29, the league received 46 dogs and 55 cats. Thirteen dogs and 66 cats were adopted; nine stray dogs were reclaimed by their owners. Seven dogs and eight cats were transferred to other rescue organizations. Baron, last week's featured pet, is still waiting to be adopted.
Cats and dogs who are overweight are susceptible to health problems just as humans are.
If you suspect your pet has a weight problem, make an appointment with your veterinarian to rule out any health problems. Consider a reduced-calorie food and reducing portions.
Exercise is also important for your pet's physical and mental health. Take your dog outside for a walk or get your cat moving by having him chase the beam that a moving flashlight casts across the floor.
One of the best things you can do for your pets is to make sure they are fit and healthy.
