"Remember, Millersville University is the best university in the United States," the message machine at Dr. Ralph Anttonen's campus office answers.

Anttonen really loves Millersville.

After 38 years of teaching and advising students at Millersville University, Anttonen can't imagine doing anything else.

"What has kept me here? Everyone who works with me becomes part of my family," he said. "I can't help being what I am: a grandfather.

"I love this little community."

Anttonen is the chairman of the department of academic and student development, director of the exploratory program and adviser to MU's student radio station, WIXQ-FM 97.1.

Anttonen came to the university in 1971 after teaching at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio.

"Doc Roc," as Anttonen is more commonly known, is also the voice of the university's men's basketball program. His distinct Boston accent can be heard announcing at home games in Pucillo Gymnasium. His wife, Judy "Mama Roc" Anttonen, sits next to him at the announcer's table as a scorer.

Together, they host a weekly radio show, "Oldies but Goodies," every Saturday from 4 to 6:45 p.m on WIXQ.

The Anttonens were also the grand marshalls for the 2008 Millersville Parade.

"We're a team," Anttonen said of his wife. "She really is as much my life as anybody."

Hometown:
Fitchburg, Mass.

Age:
68.

Education:
Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota. B.S. in mathematics from Tufts University.

Favorite part of my job:
Talking with and helping students, seeing them succeed, and talking with them when they come back to visit us.

Least favorite part of my job:
Meaningless paperwork, forms and meetings. People who play games.

Who inspires you the most in your job?
Dr. Elyse Fleming, of Case Western Reserve, who taught me how to be a student-centered professor, and Dr. John Gardner and everyone at the First-Year Experience center at University of South Carolina who continue to help me work with today's changing students.

Why is interaction with students so important to you?
When I was growing up in high school and college, so many people helped me. It's my time to give back.

Growing up, I wanted to be:
A sportswriter for the Boston Globe covering the Boston Celtics and the Boston Red Sox.

Quotation to live by:
"Never waste your time with things that waste your time."

If you had the power to order all of Lancaster to read one book, what would it be?
"The Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain," or any book by him.

And why?
His humor is right on even today, and we all need to laugh at ourselves and others.

Favorite leisure activity:
Biking, golfing, PlayStation, and going out to eat with Mama at least five days a week.

Favorite music:
Lou Christie, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and most of all, rock and roll!

Sports teams you root for:
Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Browns.

A surprising, little-known fact about you:
I have only dated one woman for over 50 years and these years are the happiest days of my life.

A common misconception that people have about Millersville:
I have lived in Millersville and been at the university for 37 years. There are no misconceptions about either of them. Both are what one makes them — for me, wonderful places.

Millersville's greatest asset:
The great caring people in the community and at the university, especially those who help me with the exploratory program.

If you could do anything tomorrow, what would it be?
Exactly what I am doing today at MU, and with the town.

Other than your Boston accent at home games, what should we look forward to with MU basketball this season?
Great Division II basketball; head coach Fred Thompson; guard/forward Reggie Bates; and Mama by my side at the scorer's table.
