The clock struck midnight on Penn Manor's impressive Cinderella season.
Cumberland Valley, behind four touchdowns from Mike Frenette, knocked off the Comets 42-10 Friday night at Chapman Stadium in the District Three Class AAAA quarterfinals.
The No. 2 seeded Eagles (10-2) advance to the semifinals where they will take on No. 6 Governor Mifflin, which upset No. 3 Central York 35-6.
The Comets finished the season 9-3 following a 1-9 campaign in 2007, and have set a new watermark in Penn Manor football history.
"I've think we've exceeded expectations," PM coach Todd Mealy said. "If you were to ask me at the beginning of the year if we would be here, I would have said that it wasn't likely. But I will say, the kids have proven themselves as competitors, that was our biggest thing that we were able to make it this far. We're grateful that we made it this far, to the say the least."
Frenette (16 carries, 174 yards) gave the crowd a taste of what was to come when he jetted 55 yards for the Eagles' first score of game. The score capped off a two-play, 79-yard drive that took just 27 seconds.
"He's super fast, he's elusive, a great athlete. He's the perfect fit for that offense," Mealy said of Frenette and CV's Wing-T offense.
Nate Rhodes put CV ahead 14-0 on the next series with a 3-yard run before Josh Bitner put the Comets on the board with a 26-yard field goal early in the second quarter.
Frenette was off to the races again with 8:15 left in the second quarter with a 64-yard jaunt to put the Eagles up 21-3 at the half.
"You've just got to give him the ball, he makes things happen," CV coach Tim Rimpfel said of Frenette. "He's getting better every week."
Penn Manor had a handful of penalties and turnovers in the first half that stalled drives that had the potential to earn points.
"We had some big plays called back for us, who knows what would have happened in the first half," said Mealy.
Sean Noll (13 carries, 87 yards) scored the Comets' only touchdown early in the second half with a 21-yard run. The scoring drive went 75 yards on 11 plays and included passes from Patrick Rehm (6-of-14 passing, 89 yards) – who was filling in for Mike Treier after Treier was ejected from last week's game – to Cody Booth (3 catches, 58 yards) and Aaron Frederick for 13 and 9 yards.
"We were concerned about stopping the midline option and the veer. They had some good play calls and caught us a few times," said Rimpfel.
"I thought they executed very well tonight."
Travis Friend (9 carries, 47 yards) and Frenette scored on runs of 5 and 4 yards, respectively, to give the Eagles a 35-10 lead after three quarters.
Frenette scored his fourth touchdown early in the fourth when he caught a short keep pass from Rhodes and took it 58-yards to paydirt.
Penn Manor had an opportunity to punch in another score with a first-and-goal at the CV 5. A pair of sacks from Quintin Emberg on third and fourth down stopped any hope of a final score.
With the building blocks now in place in Millersville, Mealy hopes future players will follow the example set by Penn Manor's senior class.
"It's up to the underclassmen on how well they will be next year, if they follow the lead of the seniors and the offseason stuff that we started," Mealy explained. "Or they can go back to what we call 'old Penn Manor football,' just show up when football season comes around. It's up to them.
"The kids have become the foundation for the Penn Manor community. They became the reason for the community to come out together and cheer for them and they're proud of that."
