Lancaster County Commissioners this morning added a 25-acre Manor Township farm to the county's preservation tally, bringing the number of preserved agricultural acres here to 79,771.

At their meeting this morning, commissioners authorized spending $43,984 to preserve the Daniel and Amy Yocom farm in Manor Township.

Through its Agricultural Preserve Board, the county buys preservation easements from farmers, essentially paying them to give up the right to ever develop their property. The preserved farms cover almost 125 square miles.

The Yocum farm is the 1,001st farm preserved in Lancaster County.

The Yocums accepted half of their farm's assessed value, which moved them up the county's list of farms waiting to be preserved, explained Matt Knepper, executive director of the county's Agricultural Preserve Board.
