The Hershey Bears tried to climb out of an early hole Saturday in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but fell one goal short as they lost to the Penguins, 4-3.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton got off to a good start when it scored on the first two shots of the game against Hershey goaltender Daren Machesney.
Dustin Jeffrey got it started for the Pens 5:51 into the game when he broke through the Bears' defense and scored.
Hershey tied it less than a minute later when Sami Lepisto fired a one-timer past Pens goalie John Curry at 6:04 of the first.
But Jonathan Filewich put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre up for good at the 8:36 mark by slipping a bouncing puck past Machesney. The Penguins took only five shots on goal in the first period while the Bears launched 16 at Curry.
Machesney's night got worse in the second as he allowed a short-handed goal to Bill Thomas 3:26 into the period. He was pulled in favor of Simeon Varlamov after allowing three goals on six shots.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added a power play goal from Jeff Taffe at 12:23 to run the lead out to 4-1.
Kyle Wilson brought Hershey to within two goals with 2:31 left in the second period. He added a second goal in the third period.
The Bears will face the Bridgeport Sound Tigers today at 4 p.m. Hershey returns to the Giant Center next Saturday to face the Philadelphia Phantoms at 7 p.m.
