It takes all types of bowlers to create a strong bowling community.

The Lancaster United States Bowling Congress Association's three selections for this year's Hall of Fame class are a testament to that fact.

Mike Hoffer and his wife, Sharron, longtime volunteers, were inducted for "meritorious service."

Tracy Beck, one of the area's top female bowlers, was inducted for "superior performance." Among her many accomplishments was rolling an 838 series in 1998, the first time a Lancaster County woman had rolled an 800.

They were inducted at a banquet in August.

The Hoffers, who have been bowling for more than 40 years, spend a lot of their time helping out the local bowling organization. Mike has been an LBA director for 25 years and Sharron has also been an LBA director for 18 years.

"Mike and Sharron are very dedicated volunteers," Sandy Myers, manager of the Lancaster Bowling Association, said. "Both are the kind of people who, if you need something done, you tell them once and it's taken care of."

Mike, who also serves on the Promotion Membership Steering Committee, bowls in the Monday Night Handicap League at Clearview and the Conestoga Industrial League at Leisure on Thursdays. He currently is averaging about 175.

Sharron is averaging in the mid-160s in the Brownstown League at 222 Dutch and the Myers Auto Body Ladies League at Leisure.

Mike, who's retired after working at Raymark Industries and the Manheim Auto Auction, said there's been "a lot of drop-off in participation" since he started bowling. He blames time constraints, money issues and job changes for the drop-off.

But he definitely isn't one of those people losing interest in the sport. He said he'll keep bowling as long as he can.

"I enjoy being out of the house, and out with friends," he said.

Sharron, who works at Fulton Financial Corp., comes from a family of bowlers.

She's made many friends in the sport, both locally and at national bowling conventions. For a few years, she was even in an Internet league that was formed through a bowling Web site.

"One thing I like about the sport is that you can do it any age," she said. "As you get older, you just use a lighter ball."

Beck, who lives near Millersville with her husband, Stephen, has bowled in numerous state and national tournaments. She won the Team USA Pennsylvania State Amateur Championship in 2000.

In one Women's All Star Association tournament, she rolled a perfect game in Allentown one day and another in Phillipsburg, N.J., the following day.

"She bowls in most of our tournaments," Myers said. "She's very friendly and very competitive."

Beck, a real estate agent and office manager for U.S. Commercial Realty, bowls in the Wednesday and Saturday men's travel leagues.

"I like the competition," she said Thursday. "I love going to the different houses."

Beck started bowling with the juniors at Leisure when she was 8 or 9.

She's had season averages as high as 207, and is around 200 this year.

This weekend, she's bowling with three different teams in the city-county mixed tournament at Cain's Lanes in Manheim.

High scores: Perfect games were rolled by Carl Meachum at Clearview, Karl Wentzel Jr. at Dutch and Shayne Beck at Blue Ball.

High series (800, men; 700, women) were rolled by Lisa Farwell (705) at Clearview and Marc Johns (785) and Kirk Shellenberger (773) at Dutch.
