The state Department of Public Welfare said it will most likely shut down a Lancaster city home day care center after two children allegedly wandered away Monday.

The department is investigating Maria Navarro's Family Childcare Home, 542 Pershing Ave.

A 1-year-old and a 2-year-old were found wandering in traffic by a passerby Monday, according to department spokeswoman Stacey Witalec.

Witalec said Tuesday the department was still investigating the incident, but if the witness account proves true, the state will revoke the day care's license.

The owner of the day care admitted the children left the house without her knowledge, Witalec said.

The telephone number for the day care is unlisted.

"Our top priority is for kids to be in a safe and healthy environment," Witalec said. "Parents should be able to leave their kids for the day to go to work or for any reason and know that they are as safe as they are in their own homes."

The day care was still in operation Tuesday Witalec said.
