Not many teenagers get to tour all over the United States just a few months after graduating from high school — let alone fly on strings 20 feet in the air over ice while dressed in a huge gown.
But that's exactly what Kim Becker has been doing since early September, when she started her first professional skating tour with Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy, a combination of both old and new Disney stories.
The new ice show will make its appearance at the Giant Center in Hershey from Wednesday through Nov. 9.
"We really try and connect with (the audience) and make sure they're having fun and make sure we notice that they're there," Becker said. "It's basically a big party."
Worlds of Fantasy features four different segments, Becker said, with the first segment featuring "Cars," "The Lion King" and "The Little Mermaid."
The second segment showcases old characters as well as a cast of new fairies from the Disney's new "Tinker Bell." In the "fairytale" segment, audiences enter into the world of Pixie Hollow and meet the fairies from "Tinker Bell" as the entire ice floor transforms into a springtime theme.
Becker's main role is as Queen Clarion, who rules over Pixie Hollow where Tinker Bell lives. She spends a good portion of the second act hanging from lines and flying over the ice.
Becker said she also serves as a sea horse in the "Little Mermaid" number.
The last acts feature life-size "Cars" characters, including Lightning McQueen, Tow Mater and more, using state-of-the-art custom animatronics to make their eyes and mouths move.
Becker said she started skating when, at age 9, her father took her to the opening of a new ice rink in Boise, Idaho.
As a teenager, she went on to enter skating competitions for six years while going to school in Littleton, Colo.
Becker said she enjoys participating in ice shows more than figure skating competitions because there is less pressure, but she still has the ability to showcase her skating talents.
"You create this big picture that's really exciting and really fun," Becker said.
At the beginning of the summer, Becker had a significant choice to make in her young career.
She was enrolled in school at Chapman University in California as a television and journalism major, but she found out that she had been accepted to participate in the ice show after submitting a video of her performances.
Becker decided to put her college career on hold and moved to Lakeland, Fla. to train for the ice show. The performers rehearsed for six weeks — from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. six days a week — to prepare for the strenuous tour.
Becker said putting together the show was a new experience, spending several days standing in place for four hours at a time to get the lighting worked out and fixing costumes.
"Once we put the costumes on and the lighting was fixed, it totally made the show come alive and definitely made it a lot easier for us to forget about all the rehearsals and all the work we'd done, and we just got really excited," Becker said.
