A report that beer cans were being thrown out of a car that was traveling without headlights led to West Hempfield Township police arresting three 16-year-old boys on drinking charges early Monday morning.
Cpl. Tim Coyle stopped the 1998 Chevrolet sedan at 2:51 a.m. at Marietta Avenue and Ivy Drive, near Silver Spring.
A 16-year-old Columbia boy was driving the car, and he only had a learner's permit, police said. Two 16-year-old Lancaster boys were his passengers.
All three teens were intoxicated, police said. The Columbia boy will be charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants and underage drinking. The two Lancaster boys will be charged with underage drinking, police said.
An accident and a separate vehicle stop on the Route 30 bridge across the Susquehanna River also have resulted in DUI arrests, West Hempfield police report.
Sharon L. Michener, 43, of York, was heading west across the bridge in a 2002 Acura sport-utility vehicle shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday, police said.
The woman was driving at a high rate of speed and not paying attention, and her vehicle struck the back of a Chevrolet SUV driven by Michael Brown, 54, of York, Officers James Gardill and Alfonso Villano reported.
No injuries were reported, but both vehicles required towing. Michener will be charged with DUI and several traffic violations, police said.
Early Saturday morning, Derek Brown, 22, of York, was speeding across the bridge in a Pontiac sedan, police said. Brown was arrested for suspected DUI, and he also will be charged with traffic violations, Officer Richard Bowermaster said.
Also on the Route 30 bridge, an eastbound Saturn sedan driven by Thomas Ream, off York, struck the back of a Suzuki sedan driven by David Newmiller, 42, of Red Lion, at 6:47 a.m. Saturday, West Hempfield police said.
No injuries were reported, but both cars required towing. Police cited Ream for careless deriving.
In other accidents:
• A Mountville man's 2008 Dodge Charger is probably a total loss from a crash that happened late Monday night on Hershey Mill Road, near Rohrer Road, Manor Township police said.
Gregory Sundberg, 25, of 204 Daltrey Court, Mountville, missed a curve while driving the Charger west at about 11:30 p.m., Officer Troy Rogers said.
The car struck a telephone pole, shearing off the bottom of the pole and letting the wire dangle, police said. After that, the car went through two or three yards and struck a tree before ending up in another yard, Rogers said.
Sundberg was injured, but got out of the car on his own, police said. Police are awaiting the results of blood-alcohol tests, Rogers said.
