The Rowland family examined the remains of their burned home of 18 years Saturday afternoon.
There wasn't much left, except for a musical Christmas bear that sporadically played "Silent Night" as it lay charred where a dining room table once stood.
"It started doing that early this morning, and the guys said 'You've gotta come see this,' " Lauri Rowland said. It was good to have something to laugh at, she said.
A blaze early Saturday destroyed the East Drumore Township home she shared with her husband, Dean, and son, Jeremy, 24.
The bilevel brick and wood frame house at 10 Ann Place was fully involved when firefighters arrived around 1:30 a.m., said Quarryville Deputy Fire Chief Jamie Welk.
The fire was reported by neighbors and took about an hour to put out, according to Welk. No injuries were reported.
Dean and Lauri Rowland were traveling home from Delaware at the time of the fire. Jeremy was sleeping at a friend's home in preparation for an early morning bowhunt.
Neighbor Zach Dempsey saw the fire when he arrived home around 1:15 a.m. and called 911.
Neighbor Michael Porter awoke to the blaze around 1:20 a.m. Saturday and also called 911.
And it was, in fact, a silent night, he said. "You wouldn't believe how quiet it was," he said. "You couldn't hear anything except the house, the fire."
Not even crickets.
Next-door neighbor Jeannette Wallace said she "smelled plastic burning" around 11:30 p.m. She thought it might be someone burning debris, and now regrets not getting up to check.
"They lost everything, literally, but the clothes on their backs," Wallace said.
The Rowlands were able to salvage an heirloom — a few glass bells from a set collected by Dean's mother, now deceased.
But a few charred baseball cards are all that remain of Dean's collection of baseball memorabilia, including a uniform he got when his wife sent him to Philadelphia Phillies Phantasy Camp in 2004.
"I was just glad everyone was out," Dean said.
Jeremy already made up his mind to be positive Saturday. "At least the Phillies are winning," he said.
The Rowlands will stay with nearby family.
The cause of the fire was unknown, Welk said. The State Police fire marshal is investigating.
