Harmony High is having a reunion, and you're invited, even if you're not a graduate.

If you're trying to figure out what school district Harmony High School is in, you won't find it in Lancaster County. Harmony High is an imaginary all-girls high school that is closing its doors forever. The musically inclined alumni have gathered for a farewell concert to reminisce about their school days.

That's the premise behind the Red Rose City Show Chorus's big "Reunion at Harmony High" musical show and concert on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. It's being held at a very real school — Conestoga Middle School on Mount Sidney Road.

"We wanted to have a way to combine a story and music," explains Carol DePaul of Red Rose City Show Chorus, an offshoot of the famous Sweet Adelines International.

Known for their barbershop-style a cappella harmonies, the Red Rose City Show Chorus has some 50 members, with about 40 of them performing at the Harmony High Reunion show. Think "High School Musical" for the Baby Boomer-plus generation, although there are some real high school singers in the group.

"We are all ages, from 16 to 88," reports DePaul, who is a newer member of the group.

By day, DePaul is a realtor who just happens to love to sing. That's the case with many of the Red Rose Show Chorus members. They are teachers, nurses, professors, doctors, businesswomen, college students, high school students, shopkeepers and just about every other profession. A few are professional musicians, such as Sonia V, who performs at local and regional venues and has recorded her own CDs.

One of the oldest members is Gloria Hoeltzel, in her 80s, who joined 27 years ago. Marg Matroni has been in the group as a charter member, starting in 1961. That's 47 years, although Matroni claims she joined when she was "a year old."

Laura Bretz, 19, is one of the youngest members. A 2007 Hempfield High School graduate, Bretz is studying interior design at York Institute of Art and singing whenever she can. Her mother, Beth Bretz, also a member of the chorus, got her interested.

What they all have in common is their love of music and singing — and the chance to perform. The show will feature both traditional and current songs arranged in the barbershop four-part a cappella style. A few of the songs being performed include "For Good" from the Broadway musical "Wicked," "What a Wonderful World," "Come Fly with Me" and "I Never Meant to Fall in Love."

The first half of the show is played in typical musical style, with acting and characters who burst into song, while the second half is the concert the "alumnae" put on to say so long to their alma mater. A quartet from the chorus Notewithstanding will also perform and the featured guest, the Old School men's quartet, will sing as the "boys" from the boys school down the road from Harmony High.

The director is Lori Jo Whithaus, who says, "It's easy to imagine being from Harmony High. That's where we all come from."
