Police investigated several burglaries that occurred in the evening and early morning hours last week in Lancaster's downtown business district, Lt. Stephen Skiles of city police reported in a statement Friday.

Entry was gained through first-floor windows and doors, some of which had been left unlocked, police said. Stolen items include laptop computers, cash and other easily concealed items.

To help prevent burglaries, police advised, install solid doors and windows and lock them before leaving. Use timers and motion sensors. Turn on porch lights at night, keep grass cut, snow shoveled and vegetation trimmed around windows. Work with neighbors to collect papers and mail and monitor vacant homes.

Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call 735-3300. Call 664-1180 to report suspicious activity.
