Former Manheim Central and University of Delaware standout Mike Byrne, who was recently released by the Miami Dolphins, has signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.
"This is a great chance to keep playing football, which is exactly what I want to do," Byrne said.
"I know it's not the NFL, but hopefully later this season I can work my way back to an NFL roster."
Byrne will play offensive tackle for Calgary, which will be playing its eighth game this season tonight.
Byrne is flying to Canada today and said he'll spend the first week or two on the practice squad before going on the active list.
"I'm not sure what to expect, really," said Byrne, who said he's never been to Canada. In fact, he had to drive to Philadelphia on Thursday to get a passport.
"I know the football there is a little different ... there are some different rules," he said. "But it is football, and I'm glad to have the opportunity to play football."
Byrne did not hear his named called in the NFL Draft earlier this past spring. But on draft day he signed a free-agent deal with the Dolphins, and he played in three preseason games before Miami released him right at the end of camp.
Byrne was working out in Manheim this week when the Stampeders' vice president of football operations called on Tuesday. By Wednesday they had a deal, and Byrne was scrambling for a passport.
"I'm anxious and I'm excited," said Byrne, who will turn 22 next month. "I didn't think I'd be back in football this quickly, so I'm excited about that."
