REVIEW: Music

You may have heard the radio hit "Misery Business," but that is only the beginning of the truly great songs on the CD "Riot!" by Paramore.

Discovered in Franklin, Tenn., this small-town band climbed its way to big-time fame. The band was formed in 2004 and got its first big break in 2005 by being signed with Fueled by Ramen.

With 19-year-old lead singer Hayley Williams's unique vocal styles making "Riot!" a must-listen album, Josh Farro (lead guitar), Jeremy Davis (bass guitar) and Zac Farro (drums) let their talent shine. "Riot!", which was released on June 12, 2007, follows the band's first album "All We Know is Falling," released in 2005. Now all they know is rising as the group continues to climb the charts with its amazing hit songs.

After listening to just one of the group's songs, you can feel the energy blasting through the speakers, and it leaves you wanting more. The band's songs aren't the classic lovesick tracks with synthesized voices and common melodies that are blared over today's radio. These songs have meaning, soulful passion and energy.

"Hayley Williams's stage presence is absolutely amazing; she really connects with the crowd. I didn't think it was possible for a band to be better live than on CD but with them it was," Kendra Hohenwarter of Lancaster said of Paramore's Philadelphia concert at the Electric Factory in November.

Paramore will visit Philadelphia again Friday for its summer 2008 tour with Jack's Mannequin, Phantom Planet and Paper Route. The group will perform on the Festival Pier at Penn's Landing.

"Riot!" is composed of upbeat, high-energy songs in Paramore's alternative style. The music makes you feel a need to sing along with the inspiring lyrics.

"For a Pessimist I'm Pretty Optimistic" starts the album off with Paramore's signature passionate sound. "Hallelujah" shows of Williams' powerful vocals. "That's What You Get," "CrushCrushCrush" and "Misery Business" are some of the great hits on this CD that will become instant fan favorites. "When it Rains," "Let the Flames Begin" and "Fences" are some personal favorites from "Riot!" These songs really capture the essence of the band I never get tired of listen to. Finally, "Born For This," "Miracle" and "We are Broken" complete the CD for a well-rounded mix of songs that makes the album one to listen to over and over again.

There is always something new to love about Paramore and the group's music each time you listen. Starting as "the next big thing," Paramore makes it known the band is here to stay not only in the musical world but in the hearts of its listeners.
