It was barely three weeks ago when Jacy Good, 21, was critically injured in a traffic wreck that killed her parents, Jay R. and Jean Good of Lititz.
On May 18, the family was driving home from Jacy's graduation at Muhlenberg College when a truck struck their vehicle on Route 222 in Berks County.
Now, the community is stepping up to help the family. Jacy remains in critical condition at Reading Hospital, said Jacy's brother, Jared Good, 25, on Friday. He attended graduation but drove separately and was not involved in the wreck.
A benefit car wash will be held today at Anthony & Sylvan Pools, 101 W. Airport Road, Lititz. The car wash begins at 10 a.m. A $5 minimum donation is requested.
"We'll be there washing cars until people aren't showing up," said Vincent DePaul, who works with Jared Good at Anthony & Sylvan.
DePaul and other employees set up a fund at Sovereign Bank to benefit the Good family. Monetary donations may be made at any Sovereign Bank branch, or checks may be made payable to The Good Family Fund, c/o Sovereign Bank, 986 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543.
"We wanted to do to something for Jared, for his family. We knew he'd never ask for anything," DePaul said.
Jacy Good has been in critical condition since the wreck. The Goods were heading south on Route 222, when a northbound milk truck swerved at an intersection. The truck was trying to avoid a westbound minivan which had entered the truck's path.
The truck hit the front of the minivan and then hit the Goods' station wagon head-on, killing Jay and Jean, both 58. Jacy was sitting in the front passenger seat of the station wagon.
Her condition is slowly progressing, her brother said.
"She's breathing on her own now," he said. Jacy Good was taken off a respirator on May 27. She underwent surgery to stabilize her pelvis and hip on Thursday.
"She's improving slowly," Jared Good said. "We actually started to look at some rehab centers in the area."
He said that his sister's recovery process will be a long journey. Blood clots also remain a major concern.
"There's no time line," he said. "We're just taking it day by day."
