Lights! Camera! Action!
The city of Lancaster begins its summer "Dinner and a Movie" series at 9 tonight in Binns Park.
The first movie of the annual series is "Seabiscuit." The 2003 film starring Tobey Maguire tells the Depression-era story of an improbable race horse and his jockey.
The movie will be shown on a screen on the main stage at the park. The stage is covered, making the event rain or shine.
Moviegoers should bring lawn chairs and blankets. The event is free to the public.
Panzini Italian Ice will be at the park serving Italian ice, popcorn, cotton candy and drinks.
The series will continue throughout the summer with a new movie being shown every Thursday night.
The movies are chosen by the Mayor's Office of Special Events.
"We try to present a diverse selection," special events manager Valerie Wagner said. "We show everything from documentaries to comedies to dramas from a wide range of years."
The city also encourages patrons to have dinner downtown before the movie. Several city restaurants are offering discounts to those who use special dining coupons on Thursday nights.
The Lancaster Parking Authority is offering a $1-off parking coupon valid at the Prince Street Garage on Thursday nights.
Wagner said this event is an economical alternative to the movie theater and a great way to benefit Lancaster city.
"This event is like a family gathering," Wagner said. "It promotes community in the city."
