An alleged burglar was unable to find a successful hiding place when police entered the Donecker's business complex in Ephrata early today.

Police found  Alan Thomas Wells, 18, of the 300 block of Washington Avenue, Ephrata, hiding under a desk in a second-floor office, Ephrata police Sgt.  Philip K. Snavely said.

A silent alarm sounded at 2:31 a.m., sending police to the Donecker's  building at 55 New St., which is behind the firm's clothing store.

The first arriving officers heard somebody running through the building, and they called for more units.  Police found Wells a short time later as they searched the two-story building.

Wells was wearing latex gloves. In his pockets, police found a screwdriver, cell phone, and a piece from  a metal floor safe that he allegedly had tried to break open,  Snavely said.

Police charged Wells with burglary, theft, and possessing instruments of crime.

In other police incidents:

• Celestino J. Lopez, 35, of 144 W. Oley St., Reading failed to post $50,000 bail after being charged with drunken driving, resisting arrest, and aggravated assault on a police officer, Manheim Township police said.

Shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, township police found Lopez unconscious in the driver's seat of a car at Oregon Pike and Olde Hickory Road. Officer Michael Naff arrested him for suspected drunken driving, Sgt. Thomas Rudzinski said.

While being processed at township police headquarters, Lopez struggled with officers and had to be restrained, Rudzinski said. Naff injured his arm during the struggle, and he required treatment at a hospital.

• New Holland police charged Kimberly A. Malesinski, 45, of 1004 Van Reed Road, Wyomissing, with aggravated assault, false reports to law enforcement, and other offenses from incidents that occurred early Sunday morning.

When stopped for a traffic violation at 1:28 a.m. in the 600 block of East Main Street (Route 23), Malesinski told Officer Wendell Metzler she was Joanie Buranen and gave a false birth date, police said.

The woman later identified herself as Malesinski and told Officer Mike Zimmerman that her driver's license had been suspended, police said.

While being processed at the New Holland police station, Malesinski became unruly, kicked Metzler in the leg, and threw an inhaler at him, police said.

Malesinski was committed to Lancaster County Prison in default of $40,000 cash bail, police said.

• New Holland police also are charging three students at Garden Spot Middle School with disorderly conduct from incidents that happened Thursday at the school.

At about noon, a 13-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy became unruly and used obscene language toward a principal who was trying to discipline the 15-year-old, Officer John Yanarella said.

At about 1:15 p.m a 14-year-old boy refused to listen to teachers in a classroom, became unruly, and pushed a desk, police said.
